What a week it has been or should I say what a MONTH!
This year has been off to a traumatic start for everyone, are you ready for a break yet? I am…
When I looked at the year to come forecast back in December it did say that January was going to be a rough ride and the reasoning was that it needed to finalize any loose ends from the last year.
February is here and we can all celebrate that this is the second phase of the year and it is starting to kick into motion and our new beginnings phase will soon be at our doorstep. This week has really reminded me to be grateful for the little things when you almost lose someone or something important to you it reminds you how simple life really is. Everyone wants for exceptional things and it’s not until you get them that you realize that wasn’t that important to you and that you never really needed it, to begin with.
In saying that I have had a productive week working away at my second book. I thought that maybe second time around I might lose my spark or the feeling of excitement as you add new content and story-lines but nope… the thrill is still there. I still find it surreal that as I write the characters come to life in my mind and I literally know everything about them, sounds silly but I could tell you what kind of music they listen to, what their habits are and I even know what their favourite flavour of ice-cream is.
The creation of characters has to be one of my favourite parts of the writing process. I have done this with both of my books thus far, the very last page has an index of characters and notes. I write their full names, a description of what they look like, their nationality, any personality traits and I add to this as I go along with the story. It helps me as working, home life, coming backwards and forth all of the time can make you feel a bit lost to where you were last at, I read the last paragraph then check over the index and notes. I find this system really helps me smoothly get back into the flow of writing.
I have been asked in the past how do I get into the mood to begin writing and the truth is I just start writing, it may not end up staying there until the end or may not even last the day but it’s putting words to paper that is important. You realize you are in the zone when you find yourself correcting and re-reading, discovering that you may not like what you have been writing as it may not suit the situation or might just need to be moved to another page. I find it important for myself to channel my moods with my writing and find it can be quite therapeutic.
No matter what you do or write there is no such thing as failure. Mistakes happen in your life to bring into focus more clearly who you really are. It takes both rain and sun to grow beautiful flowers and without pain there is no joy, so when you are having a bad day, or week, just remember that tomorrow is a fresh start, get out of your comfort zone, try something new and with a new day comes new strength and new thoughts. You have the power in yourself to choose to give this day your all and make it your best day yet.
